I'm not sure how I missed this book. I believe it is 1 of Tchaikovsky's best. It predates Marvel-induced multiverse burnout (2020). It is also a portal fantasy. The turns he posits leading to completely different development of species on earth are very, very creative.
I like his definition of evolution, slightly different from mine:
imperfect self-replicating system in an environment of limited resources.I replace "in an environment of limited resources" with "with differiential survivability".
I wound up staying up to 12:40 am finishing this book last night. I almost never do that any more. But, I thought I was about at the ending. But this book ends, and ends, and ends, and ... Be warned.
Again, highly recommended, check it out.
