John Scalzi is the King of Snark. He has definitely found himself a milieu in his "Star Wars cantina" stories - lots of different kinds of aliens, with who knows what organs, sensorium, values, phobias, sexual practices, etc.?
This 1 is about a human public servant in a heavily alienized district. Hilarity ensues, & as is appropriate for a novella, 1 kinda big plot point/conflict, which is of course resolved in an exciting & satisfying manner.
Scalzi really excels at this stuff. More eye-rolls than LOLs, but still, so much fun!
