I had problems with Newitz's 1st novel, since then I have liked them pretty well.
This is an odd book. In the galactic halo lives a race of giant but single-celled organisms. I think they live pretty much in the vacuum of space? Maybe no atmosphere? They have galactic-scale teleportation. They believe there is no life possible in the galactic disk. An outcast student at their MIT follows up on signals indicating life they detected from the outskirts of the disk.
They go to investigate, & encounter life - humans living in Pompeii, just before the famous, fatal eruption of Mt. Vesuvius!
There is academic intrigue. Newitz, as usual, demonstates that anything can have sex with anything. There are several touching love stories. And it has a happy ending. An OK read, but, I was not particularly sorry when it was over.
Note, the most recent effort of Newitz's partner, Charlie Jane Anders, "Lessons in Magic and Disaster" had an interesting concept of how to do magic. But, maybe 1/4 of the way in, our 2 they characters are going to have sex with 1 of them being strapped to rings in the floor & tortured. I try to be open-minded, but, I just didn't want to read that. I actually deleted the eBook from my iPad.
