I enjoyed his Shattered Seas trilogy, wow, all the way back in 2018, blogged here. He's a Brit & a gritty writer.
I thought this was mentioned as the 1st of a trilogy, but I can't find anything to confirm that. So maybe it's standalone.
This is basically a Suicide Squad kind of setup: convicted miscreants are the pope's Mission Impossible team. They are led by a cleric, and include a werewolf, a vampire, an immortal warrior, a magician, a fixer, and an elf. Sounds like D&D. Their mission is to place the young thief who is the long lost Empress of Troy back on the throne.
It's a very nice alternate history. Jebus was a woman & was broken on the wheel rather than crucified, so their holy symbol is the circle rather than the cross. The pope & most of the church officials are women. Troy won the Trojan War & still is the major power of eastern Europe. Carthage defeated Rome? And the crusades were fought against invading elves rather than Moslems.
It's definitely a page turner, a lot of fun.
