The Passing of the Dragon and Other Stories

"The Passing of the Dragon and Other Stories", by Ken Liu, 2026, 384 pages, 102k words, 13 stories.

Liu's last novel was really strong, so I prioritized reading this collection. Liu really gets GenAI/LLMs & a lot of its implications. I think he has drunk the koolaid. The surest sign that someone has drunk the "AI" koolaid is when they talk about CSI (Continous Self Improvement) as if it is inevitable or even possible. I don't remember Liu's stance on CSI.

This a somewhat uneven collection of stories. I had read the title tale before, it is a good story. A few of the stories fell flat for me. Some were refreshingly different, like the tale of 2 scorpions. Also some interesting slipstream, say where objects become infused with the essence of their owners & must be cleaned.

The last story is about an AI who becomes famous for writing (or not writing) its memoirs. Liu discloses that 10% of the text of the story was indeed LLM-generated. Well, at least he lets us know.
