Green City Wars

"Green City Wars", by Adrian Tchaikovsky, 2026, 432 pages, 112k words.

The latest from my current fav SFF author.

Set 50-100 years in the future, green cities now grow from the sites of old cities. Totally solar-powered, 0 carbon footprint. This story takes place in the green city now growing over Vienna.

The infrastructure is all run by genetically enhanced, cyborged animals: mice, rats, squirrels, stoats, racoons, badgers, pigeons, parrots, crows, frogs, newts. A few predators/raptors as well. All with their own species special proclivities. The mice are the proletariat, the rats organized crime, the red & grey squirrels the perpetually skirmishing militia armies.

Our hero is a racoon named Skotch, who quit his job for a US-based corporation to become a film noir cheap detective - yay! He is hired by his old bosses to find a particular mouse scientist. Apparently every other group in the green city also wants to find this mouse.

The action is non-stop, the characters memorable. I would place this up there with "Mrs. Frisbee & the Rats of Nimh" & "Watership Down". The animals are at least as human as humans, but still keep their animal personalities. I was sorry when this was over.
